How To Select the Right Window Covering

  • What size to get?

  • How high should they be?

  • Should they touch the floor?

Follow these easy steps to have your window treatments looking great!

1. Where is the window?

We have to first consider the window that's being covered and where it is. If this is a casual room with a relaxed setting. It doesn't have to be very long. The longer, the more formal the feel. I personally prefer long curtains and don't go below 95", but you don't have to stick with that if that isn't your style.

"First, consider the window that's being covered"

For kitchen coverings, especially above the sink, nothing longer than 63" needs to be hung. If it's a window longer than 63", a bare window, a Roman shade, or nice shutters look the best. Remember the kitchen needs to be a high functioning space and long curtains just aren't practical for this area.

For other areas like a bedroom, dining, or living room area definitely choose curtains that at least hit the floor. 84" is the average length most popular found in retail store but they will only hit the floor if hung right at the top window sill. Hanging them a little higher above the window sill always look better, so aim to get 95".

2. How much light?

If you want the room to be light and airy, having a transparent fabric is the way to go. Having your treatments lined are still important even though you want the transparent feel. There is a way you can hang curtains without lining without them looking like sheers depending on the color and weight. If you would like a heavier, more formal feel then look into blackout curtains where light does not penetrate through.

Here are some great blackout curtains from Target:

3. How high/low should they go?

This is very important especially if you have a small room. To create the illusion that your ceilings are higher and your windows are taller, hang them above the top window sill. This does wonders to make your room seem bigger!

If you try to hang your curtains this way, you will definitely need curtains starting at 95" or taller. They will look fantastic!

Having them sweep the floor gives a very dreamy, soft, and luxurious effect in your room. Don't be afraid to have them low on the floor. It will have the designer touch!
