Farmhouse...rustic...country living... you get the idea. The simple but charming style has taken over and its not hard to understand why. Here are 5 elements to include that can bring a little southern warmth to any decor.
1. Wood
The rustic style is all about a natural look. What is more natural than the element of wood? You can do this with a table top, wooden pallets, picture frames, etc. Now you have to be careful to not look too country by having a full dining set of all pine dining chairs. There is always a balance to doing things. The modern way of including wood is by having one or two things in this finish.
2. Metal
Tin, copper, aluminum are all good metals that will give a nice farmhouse feel. It doesn't have to be perfectly shiny or in "new" condition. Again, it has to be incorporated in a balanced way so you can't go overboard. A few accessories like a tray, a windmill, metal clock would be great for any rustic space.
3. Jute/Sisal
These materials are great for a "natural" rustic feel. True, they are not the softest of textures. But they are very durable and can take a lot of wear in the long run. The easiest way to take advantage of this element is in an area rug. You can also re- do some accessories like a trash bin wrapped in jute rope or a picture frame trimmed in a jute cord.
4. Burlap
It is surprisingly easy to find this material. It's not only available in craft stores but also in general stores like Wal-Mart or Dollar Tree. Make a table runner out of it or a cute door wreath.
5. Distressed Items
Now this is where thrift store and yard sale shopping comes in handy. The great thing about rustic decor is that NOTHING has to be in pristine condition. There is a thin line between rustic and tacky. So putting a nicely polished metal tray with an old chipped tea kettle balances the two pieces. Have fun with different elements of rustic decor to make it your own!
